Every day since meeting Alice seemed better than the last, and their Sunday date continued that trend with hours upon hours of delight. Underneath the warm sun and cool breeze, the two women hit the town, deposited by Aliceâs limo, and left to roam the charming streets of a city based around tourism. Alice quickly sent the limo away to give them a chance for a bit of privacy and discretion; a pairing like theirs was likely to garner quite a bit of attention even without the luxury vehicle following them around. Besides, the beauty of a tourist trap was that everything they could possibly desire was well within reach, and there was plenty within a few city blocks for them to enjoy.
First stop had been breakfast, obviously. They chose a quaint little spot along the boardwalk, tucked into a patio with a glass wall to give visitors a view of the ocean while protecting them from that distinctive sea smell. There the two enjoyed fine morning treats of fresh fruit and French pastries, and what was perhaps the most delicious cup of hot cocoa Addie had ever tasted. (She might have rambled endlessly about the house special cinnamon-whipped marshmallow topping.)
Though Ms. Conroy was light on conversation, she was heavy on smoldering gazes, and the entire time Addie talked about how pretty the ocean was, the older womanâs eyes were focused mostly on her. Every time Addie turned back to Ms. Conroy, she found the womanâs eyes waiting for her, ensuring that there was never a moment when she was left wanting for her attention. Whether she was turning back from the waitress after ordering a decadent second refill of her cocoa or pointing to a boat in the distant ocean, she always found intent eyes upon her. A constant reminder that even though she was far from home and the people she once knew, she never had to look far to find someone to share experiences with.
From the breakfast nook, they moved on to the famous Monterey Bay Aquarium, where Addie spent hours marvelling. The entire time she hung on Aliceâs arm while gazing in outright glee at everything she witnessed, giggling at charming seals and otters and gasping at the sheer scale of the whale exhibit. In a large auditorium-style room, a massive glass wall stretched to the ceiling, and people were free to sit and watch as peaceful marine life floated about in the ultimate relaxing, soothing experience.
âMy God, Alice, look...it looks like theyâre flying.â Addieâs eyes were wide as she sat with her companion in the very back of the room, tracing the movements of a pair of sea turtles swimming near the top of the tank. Their motions were indeed gloriously fluid, and if one forgot about the wall of water before them, itâd be easy to imagine the animals had taken to the air. Addie was so invested and enthralled that one of her hands lowered to Aliceâs knee, and she squeezed it as she turned her head to regard the other woman.
